Flavor Friday: Muira the Monk

Well, as you can all tell by now, I haven’t really been “on the ball” when it comes to the Flavor Fridays. Sometimes they’re there, and sometimes they’re not. And I’ve come to the decision that I’m going to keep it that way. I’m planning to, from now on, try to put out a Flavor Friday every 2 weeks or so. And, in the spirit of that, I’ll begin today by presenting one of the iconic characters from my personal campaign setting: Esperim.

And, since I just rebuilt the monk, I figure I should put forth my iconic monk: Muira.


Muira was born in the highlands of northern Estar, in the province of Katrisse. She never met her parents, and was given to an orphanage before she could walk. At age five, a group of monks from the Order of the Sacred Fist came to the orphanage to search for potential candidates. Muira, a spunky young girl with a knack for getting into fights, was their only choice. She traveled with them to their mountain monastery, and trained with the monks for twelve years, learning self-control, meditation and—of course—the fighting techniques of the Sacred Fist. At age seventeen, however, her life would take a dark turn.

A group of vampiric, ki-draining monks from a rival monastery attacked the Sacred Fist monastery and killed the majority of the monks therein. Muira was one of the few who was able to escape, drained of her ki and nearly dead, but still alive. She had to watch as the evil monks set fire to her home, taking her life from her.

For a year afterwards, Muira wandered from place to place, choosing to drink herself into a stupor most of the time, and spending most of her money on strong drink so that she wouldn’t have nightmares of that horrific day. Soon, she discovered something. The spirits were awakening something in her that she had not felt for a long time. Her ki was coming back, bit by bit, after it was taken by the fierce vampiric monks. Somehow, her drunken state allowed her to access abilities that she thought were lost. She resumed her training, mastering the alcohol and her drunken state, that she might fight even more effectively. And with this new talent awakened within her, she swore vengeance on those who destroyed her home.
